Calkins Combination Cleaner Grader Treater
While harvesting grains, every grain will be collected, this includes every grain with impurities and different sizes. Organizing thousands of grains by hand is a very impossible task, so the easiest way to organize thousands of grains was to run all of them through many metal screens. This Calkins Combination Cleaner Grader Treater would have been one of many similar machines used in this process. The grains were dumped on the top of the bin and the grain would be filtered by multiple screens for separating different sizes with an electric motor to shack the screens. Once the grains are filter, a screw conveyor will move the grain into a
bucket elevator (seen on the right of the machine), where the grain is collected in a treatment application drum (a type of rotating drum where the grain is cleaned, on the back of the treater) and finally the grain gets dumped into a container from an opening in the treatment application drum. This treater was made by the Calkins Manufacturing Company, a Spokane-based company known for both farm implements and boat trailers, starting in the 1960s, later specializing in fluid power components and systems, they operated from 1923 to 1997, which this treater was built around this time.
